Ensuring Resilience and Sustainability: The Critical Role of Lightning Protection in Solar Power Systems
Ensuring Resilience and Sustainability: The Critical Role of Lightning Protection in Solar Power Systems
Understanding the Importance of Lightning Protection for Solar Power Systems“” Solar power systems, as a representative of clean energy, have gained widespread attention and application in the context of sustainable development. However, it is crucial for us to understand the potential risks of lightning in the environment where solar power systems operate and why implementing lightning protection measures is vital for the system. Firstly, solar power systems are often installed outdoors, exposed to the natural environment. During thunderstorms, lightning poses a threat to the system, as a single strike may not only lead to equipment damage but also initiate safety hazards such as fire. Strengthening lightning protection measures significantly enhances the safety performance of the system, providing comprehensive protection for users and equipment. Secondly, lightning protection measures help ensure the stable operation of solar power systems. Key components such as solar panels and inverters are expensive and intricate devices. A lightning strike could result in system failure, disrupting the normal generation of electricity. Through scientifically designed lightning protection, the likelihood of the system being struck by lightning can be effectively reduced, ensuring stable operation and extending the lifespan of the equipment. Thirdly, lightning protection is critical for reducing maintenance costs. Once a solar power system is struck by lightning, repairing and replacing damaged equipment can consume significant time and financial resources. Investing in appropriate lightning protection facilities during the initial construction phase can lower maintenance costs in the long run, improving the economic efficiency of the system. Lastly, emphasizing lightning protection is also about achieving a more environmentally friendly use of energy. Solar power systems are designed to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources, lower carbon emissions, and promote green and sustainable energy utilization. Strengthening lightning protection measures helps protect the system, minimizing equipment damage and environmental pollution caused by lightning strikes, thus contributing to environmental conservation efforts. In conclusion, understanding the importance of lightning protection for solar power systems is a fundamental aspect of advancing the development of clean energy. Through scientifically designed lightning protection and reasonable preventive measures, we can ensure the stable, safe, and efficient operation of solar power systems, providing robust support for achieving sustainable development goals. #SolarPowerSystems #LightningProtection #Sustainabledevelopment #RenewableEnergyUtilization

Exeter homes get solar panels to tackle climate change
Exeter homes get solar panels to tackle climate change
IMAGE SOURCE,EXETER CITY COUNCIL Image caption, Solar panels and insulation are being installed in council houses in Exeter. About 300 council houses in Exeter have received solar panels and insulation as part of a council's net zero aim. The additions are being installed as part of a £2.4m project to help tenants save money and tackle climate change. It is being jointly funded by the government and Exeter City Council, and aims to change 4,000 local authority homes by 2030. One resident said the insulation had made a "big difference" to her. The project, known as retrofitting, will see council houses receive improved insulation, solar panels, upgraded central heating systems and better ventilation. Rebecca Merrett, a tenant, said: "Through the winter for us the insulation has made a big difference.   "We've had solar panels put on, new double glazing and doors and all the housing has been insulated."   Image caption, Rebecca Merrett said she uses less energy since the refit. Ms Merrett added she now only puts her heating on for about an hour-and-a-half in the morning and evening, a big drop from where she previously lived. The work is being carried out with a £1.3m investment from the council in addition to a £1.1m government grant to tackle fuel poverty in the city's least energy efficient homes.

Carlisle MP calls for mandatory solar panels on new-build homes
Carlisle MP calls for mandatory solar panels on new-build homes
IMAGE SOURCE,REUTERS Image caption, The industry supports mandatory panels on new builds Calls for solar panels on new-build homes to be made mandatory have been made by the MP for Carlisle. Conservative John Stevenson's amendment to the government's Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill would require panels on houses built after April 2025. Writing for Conservative Home he said the benefits would be "substantial". The government was criticised in 2015 for removing subsidies for solar panels and, in 2019, for stopping solar feed-in tariffs for new users. But trade association Solar Energy UK said the industry no longer needed subsidies. In a report published this week, it also called for mandatory solar panels on new-build homes.   Mr Stevenson, who chairs the Northern Research Group, said they could "increase our renewable energy supply, reduce residential energy bills, and boost our domestic solar panel industry".   IMAGE SOURCE,UK PARLIAMENT Image caption, John Stevenson said the market for new-build panels would be large He added: "Had we had this policy in place five years ago, just think of the number of households who would have benefitted with regard to their energy bills today." The government was accused of being "misguided" in scrapping feed-in tariffs and incentives but Mr Stevenson said it had been right as they "added charges to bills in order to subsidise a particular technology". A scheme for mandatory panels was different because it would be "cost neutral to the Treasury", he said. The scheme would "encourage the market to find a solution" which was a "far more preferable route than financial incentives or subsidies", he added. Gemma Grimes, director of policy for Solar Energy UK, which represents solar energy companies, said Mr Stevenson was "right that the best time to put solar on a house is when it gets built".   Its research suggested panels on new homes could cut bills by more than £1,000 per year, she said.

Solar panel sales boom as energy bills soar
Solar panel sales boom as energy bills soar
IMAGE SOURCE,GETTY IMAGES By Simon Read Business reporter, BBC News   The energy bills crisis has prompted a big rise in demand for solar panels. Just over 3,000 solar installations are being carried out every week, according to trade association Solar Energy UK, up from 1,000 a week in July 2020. One provider said this month it had seen enquiries about solar panels rise tenfold. "More solar panels are being put on British roofs than ever before," said Chris Hewett, chief executive of Solar Energy UK.   The fact that renewable energy helps protect the planet has always made it an attractive option. The way they work is simple: the panels absorb sunlight through photovoltaic cells which convert it into electricity that can be flowed through your home, or into a battery.   The process significantly reduces the amount of electricity you will need from the network. People who have successfully installed solar panels report saving hundreds of pounds on electricity bills. But they are not the answer for everyone, as installing them means an upfront investment of thousands of pounds and you'll need the right type of property. Soaring energy prices, however, have slashed the time taken to recoup your initial costs. 'Lives at risk' without more help on energy bills What can I do if I can't pay my energy bill? How high will energy bills go? How much does it cost? A decade ago a typical solar panel system cost around £20,000 and would take around a decade to cover those set-up costs. But prices for solar panel systems have fallen by more than 60% since then, meaning it takes between four and five years for a system to pay for itself.   The price includes installation and the number of panels will depend on how much space you have on a roof. A typical 20sq m roof could hold 12 panels. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors suggests a standard solar panel system costs between £9,000 to £11,700, while Solar Energy UK lists the cost of a "typical" 3.1kWp system for a three-bed house as £3,925. What you'll end up paying will depend on the size of the system, the type of panel you choose, the quality of components, the accessibility and state of repair of your roof, and the individual installer, says Which? Why record heat doesn't mean record solar power The price hikes that lie ahead What types of properties are suitable?   IMAGE SOURCE,GETTY IMAGES Image caption, Many houses in the UK are just not designed to cope with a warming climate but homeowners are adapting Not everyone will own a home that can benefit from solar energy, especially if you own a north-facing property, or your home is largely shaded. "Solar panels are perfect for residential properties with a south, east or west-facing roof, preferably without any shading," says Mandip Bhamra, head of renewables at SaveMoneyCutCarbon. "Depending on how old your house is, you may want to check your roof is structurally sound before fitting the solar panels onto it," says Brian Davenport, owner of The Solar Centre .   He says most installers will have access to a structural engineer for calculating the wind-load should a roof show any signs of distress. "There should also be a small amount of room made available in your loft for the inverter, which is roughly the size of a microwave," he adds. If you live in a flat you'd need to discuss the issue of installing solar panels with other residents and the freeholder. "For a block of flats, most roofing should be fine, and with some flats where there is excess land, these can be placed in the ground too," says Mandip Bhamra. How much could solar power help reduce your bills? The amount of electricity solar panels generate depends on the type and size of system and home. A report for Solar Energy UK suggests that a typical home could cut electricity bills by more than £300 a year. Households with electric heating could be more than £900 a year better off, the report said, although most UK households remain on gas central heating. If energy bills rise as predicted this winter, then the value of electricity generated through solar panels could almost double, says Kevin Holland, managing director of The Solar Shed, a Norfolk-based renewable energy business. He says a typical solar panel system could generate £1,200 worth of electricity in a year at current prices. If energy bills rise by 80% in October plus a further 50% in January, as forecast, then the value of electricity generated by a typical system could climb to around £3,240. Also, if you don't actually use all the electricity you generate, you can sell that surplus to an energy firm. 'Solar panels help me save £80 a month'   IMAGE SOURCE,COLIN FROUDE Image caption, Fitting solar panels is a wise move, says Colin Froude Colin Froude installed solar panels on his detached home in Salisbury, Wiltshire 11 years ago. "I've never regretted it. It paid for itself in about seven or eight years and now my energy bills are just £67 a month, a saving of up to £80 a month," says Colin, who used to be in the Royal Air Force but is now retired. "Paying that by standing order means I've actually built up a £330 credit in recent months so even when bills climb in October I won't increase my standing order as that credit should see me through into the New Year." He spent £18,000 on installing 19 solar panels on his home in 2011 and says that has since generated £21,000 worth of electricity. He spent another £12,000 installing a battery, new transformer and optimisers fitted to each panel a year ago but says that has improved efficiency enormously. The move paid off. The system generated 1,600kwh in three months this summer. "I did it to future-proof the house as protection against power cuts but it's rapidly paying for itself." He cooks with electricity and says the solar panels generate all the hot water the household needs, so in the summer months when the heating is off, he pays nothing for gas.

Portsmouth: Work to put in 8,900 solar panels at business park starts
Portsmouth: Work to put in 8,900 solar panels at business park starts   Work to put more than 8,900 solar panels on roofs and car parks is under way in Portsmouth. The Lakeside North Harbour project will see 1,820 panels put on five buildings and 7,105 on canopies over spaces at three car parks at the business park. Portsmouth City Council said they were expected to provide enough power run 1,300 three-bedroom homes for a year. The work started on Monday and is expected to be finished by autumn 2024.   The city council claims once finished it will be one of the largest solar parking canopy projects in the UK and would reduce its carbon footprint by more than 860 tonnes per annum. Funded by the city council's Low Carbon Projects Fund, the authority said power from the panels will be enough to power all 55 businesses at the site.   Why car parks are the hottest space in solar power Is it getting too hot for solar panels? Is the UK on track to meet its climate targets?   Councillor Kimberly Barrett, cabinet member for climate change and greening the city, said:  "To begin working on possibly the largest solar canopy project in the UK is a great step in coming closer to our goal of Net Zero by 2030 and using greener energy in the city."   The project also includes batteries to store excess solar energy and electric vehicle (EV) charging points. The authority is planning to have about 40,000 solar panels on local authority buildings by the end of 2024.

Portsmouth City Council claims to be largest investor in solar panels
IMAGE SOURCE,GETTY IMAGES Image caption, Portsmouth City Council will have about 40,000 solar panels by the end of 2024, according to its leader A south coast city is claiming to be one of the country's biggest public investors in solar panels. Portsmouth will have about 40,000 solar panels on local authority buildings by the end of 2024, according to council leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson. The figure was revealed during a meeting with businesses to discuss the city's green economic future. Mr Vernon-Jackson said every council building had got them.   IMAGE SOURCE,LDRS Image caption, Gerald Vernon-Jackson explained the council's focus on solar panels, shore power and regeneration of the city Businesses, training partners and public sector workers met on Friday for an event hosted by the council named The Future is Green. Mr Vernon-Jackson went through the various green initiatives and strategies the local authority had adopted with a focus on solar panels, shore power and the regeneration of the city centre.   He said the city council was "the largest investor in solar panels" out of any local authority in the country. "We will eventually get, in a year's time, around 40,000 solar panels on council buildings in Portsmouth. "You might have noticed at the port that we put covers over the lanes where people queue to put their tickets in. "The only reason why we've done it is to put more solar panels on - so we can make the port the first carbon-neutral port in the country," the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported him saying. Mr Vernon-Jackson added the council intended to repeat the exercise at Lakeside car park "to drastically reduce the electricity bills which are enormous". The council said it had a total capacity exceeding 6.3MW, equating to more than 20,000 individual solar panels and able to provide power to 2,000 homes.   The council said by the end of 2024 it hoped to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 3,000 tonnes per annum.
